| Our Pre-K Level I program reflects a developmental approach to teaching and learning. Children are often divided into groups according to age and skill level, so that a teacher may provide activities that are most appropriate for each group. Academic skills are taught in ways that are fun for the children, and information is provided in a context that is interesting to them. Children are introduced to pre-reading skills including letter recognition and complex letter-sound correspondences, science, and social studies, including learning about their own community and different cultures. In addition, children are encouraged to participate in art projects, sensory-motor games, drama, cooking, and singing. There is a mix of teacher-directed activities and time for free exploration and play. The academic objectives of the Pre-K Level I program include the knowledge of personal information (last name, age, address, birth date, etc.), recognition of letters, understanding of phonics (complex sounds and blends), recognition of numerals and an understanding of numerical concepts. It is not our expectation that a child must master all of these skills in our Pre-K Level I program, but our goal is to expose the child to all of these skills and familiarize children with a variety of learning activities. In addition to language and math, the curriculum includes science, social studies, art, cooking and music. The children are introduced to these topics through monthly and weekly "themes" in which a variety of knowledge is explored. Social skills and healthy emotional development are a big part of the Pre-K Level I program. Children continue to learn the "social graces" of sharing toys and materials and taking turns. Our goal is to try to facilitate a healthy self-concept for each child by ensuring that they have many experiences that are successful. Field trips are incorporated into the monthly themes studied so that "hands on " activities enrich learning. The Pre-K Level I program selected may be either part-time or full-time or a mixture of both morning and full day schedules. A morning schedule 9-12:30p.m. is one option, and we also offer a 9-3p.m. schedule. This program offers a 1:8 ratio with a maximum enrollment of 24 children. Extra-curricular enrichment classes are available in Gymnastics, Spanish, Music, or Dance four afternoons a week. Our teachers prepare a "hot lunch" once a week as a fund raiser to purchase special classroom materials outside of their regular budget. |
